Model UN Introduction

What is Model UN?

The Northwest High Magnet School Model United Nations program is part of the International Diplomacy strand of magnet courses (see our magnet page). It is designed to give students invaluable experience in debate, conflict resolution, negotiation, public speaking, and diplomacy.

Students study current events and real-world issues and then debate these issues in simulations designed to increase their skills and prepare them for Model UN conferences. At the sophomore level (Political Science/Model UN class), the target is the University of Nebraska-Omaha Model UN Conference (UNOMUNC), which takes place each March.

Students in the advanced class (Model United Nations) prepare for and compete with one another to attend the Global Classrooms International Model UN Conference (GCIMUN) in New York City each May. This conference, which is part of a series of worldwide middle- and high-school symposiums sponsored by the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), offers students a chance to debate important global issues with their peers from around the world.

Model UN courses:

Political Science/Model UN
This course is designed to furnish an orientation to the activities of the United Nations, as well as providing an understanding of the modalities of international diplomacy. This course will include an introduction to political science, current events, pressing international issues, and some of the protocol and procedures of diplomacy, culminating in intensive simulation of the United Nations in which students will face real-world situations and issues.

Model United Nations
This course is designed to provide a more in-depth look into the activities of the United Nations. This course will include current events, pressing international issues, public speaking and debate skills, and some of the protocol and procedures of diplomatic meetings. All of this will assist students in preparing for their role as distinguished delegates at the Model United Nations Conference in New York.

The mission of Omaha Northwest High School, a community of learners, is to provide educational opportunities which enable ALL students to achieve and lead in academic success.
