Dr. Joseph Steele

                Math is the international language of science, engineering, finance, research, data analysis, computing, and many others.
      
                                                                Math is how we discover things that are not obvious.


I attended UNL and earned B.S. degrees in Math and Physics.  I then went to the University of Wisconsin - Madison to get a Ph.D. in particle physics.  I did my thesis research at the Fermi Accelerator Lab ("Fermilab") on an experiment called CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab).
At the time, Fermilab was the most powerful particle accelerator in the world.  Located in the suburbs of Chicago, it manufactured anti-protons, then accelerated protons and anti-protons almost to the speed of light, and collided them together.  When so much energy is in such a small area, it can change into matter (E=mc^2).  Research at Fermilab centered around creating unusual forms of matter, and studying their properties.  For my thesis, I analyzed the rate at which J/psi particles were created in those collisions. 
After graduate school, I had post-doctoral positions at Fermilab, on an experiment called "D Zero".  I worked for the University of Virginia, Columbia University, and Louisiana Tech University.  I took a staff job at Canada's Triumf National Lab in Vancouver, working on ATLAS, an experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (now the most powerful particle accelerator in the world).  After a few years, the position was eliminated by government funding cuts, and I returned home to Nebraska.  I worked as a software developer in the Bioinformatics Department at UNO, but that job did not involve teaching, so I found it unsatisfying.  I returned to UNL and earned my Masters in Education, then finally came to Northwest.
